David Foster Wallace und sein Archiv.

David Foster Wallace: Nach seinem Tod ist sein Nachlass in universitäre Archive gewandert.

In einer Welt der Bilder, die nichts anderes sind als  Oberflächen, hinter denen sich nichts mehr verbirgt, in einer Welt also, in der der Inhalt immer weniger zählt, verkörpern Bücher eine stille Größe. Sie erscheinen wie Schatzkästchen, in denen sich anstatt Goldtalern Buchstaben befinden, die Worte bilden, die wiederum die Grundlage von Sätzen sind, die zu uns sprechen und uns tatsächlich etwas sagen wollen.

So geschah es, dass David Foster Wallace erst wirklich zu seinen deutschen Lesern sprach, nachdem er schon nicht mehr lebte. Er sprach im Buch „Infinite Jest“ über den Irrsinn es modernen Lebens. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner Veröffentlichung in Deutschland war das Buch bereits 10 Jahre in Amerika zu haben.

„Unendlicher Spass“ war geradezu staatstragend, anders kann man die Einhelligkeit in der Beurteilung des Buches unter der Kritikerzunft nicht nennen. 1.547 Seiten Sprache, die etwas aussagten. 1.547 Seiten Liebe zum Wort. Denn das wollen einige Leser noch: Leidenschaft im Schreiben, Hingebung an das Wort, die Sprache. David Foster Wallace hat diese Sehnsucht befriedigt. Um das erreichen zu können, waren seine besten Freunde exotische Nischen-Wörtenbücher aus der Medizin oder aber Arzneimittelkataloge – kurz all jene Worte, die einen guten Klang hatten aber völlig unverständlich sind.

„The Pale King“ und „Unendlicher Spaß“

Endoplast hatte rund um das Erscheinen von „Unendlicher Spaß“ berichtet: Unter anderem auch darüber, dass das Erscheinen des Buches auf Deutsch natürlich so lange dauern mußte, weil der Übersetzer mit all diesen ausgestorbenen oder in ihrer Existenz bedrohten oder neuen Worten seine liebe Müh‘ hatte. Nachdem die gewaltige Medienwelle um das Erscheinen des Buches abgeklungen war, gab es nur noch zu berichten, dass „The Pale King“, das letzte Romanfragment des Autors, der sich selbst getötet hatte, noch publiziert wird und dass ansonsten alles, was den Autor begleitete, in Literaturarchive wanderte – auf dass es dem Wissenschaftsbetrien und der Nachwelt erhalten bliebe.

Newsweek im Wallace-Archiv

Die Newsweek hat jetzt noch ein bißchen Öl ins Feuer gegossen als sie von einem Besuch in so einem Archiv berichtete, in dem nun ein Teil des Nachlasses des Autors bewahrt wird. So sind denn auch 300 Bände seiner Büchersammlung dem „Harry Ransom Center“ der „University of Texas“ übergeben worden. Dies hat deshalb mehr als die übliche Bedeutung, als man vermuten darf, dass sich darin besondere Schätze der Wortkultur befinden müssen, da David Foster Wallace dafür bekannt war, dass er eben solche Bücher aufgespürt, für seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit ausgewertet und gehortet hat. Er hat sie darüber hinaus beim Lesen mit zahlreichen handschriftlichen Notizen versehen, hat sie kritisiert, ergänzt, umformuliert. Das wird der Literaturwissenschaft noch viele Möglichkeiten geben, das Denken des Autors weiter auszuloten.

Weltliteratur, Stephen King und Thomas Harris

Es befindet sich darunter sehrr Unterschiedliches: Wie zu erwarten fast alle Werke von Don DeLillo aber auch von Thomas Harris (Hannibal, Schweigen der Lämmer), einiges von John Updike und J. M. Coetzee, viele europäische Klassiker mit Goethe, Frisch, Brecht als Lyriker und Kafka, ein repräsentativer Querschnitt durch die amerikanischen Romancies aber auch viele Sachbücher der Geisteswissenschaft, Mathematik und Psychologie. Es ist sogar ein Buch von Stephen King dabei: „Carrie“. Und „Practically painless English“ von Sally Foster Wallace, seiner Mutter.
